Five million deaths from Covid-19 worldwide
Washington: Over 5 million people reported died of Covid-19 across the world within 19 months since the pandemic outbreaks, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The vaccines have reduced the death rate, but some health experts say the exact toll could be far higher as some countries couldn’t manage to report accurate figures.
The staggering figure is almost certainly an undercount because of limited testing and people dying at home without medical attention, especially in poor parts of the world, such as India.
Nearly 250 million cases of the virus have been recorded worldwide.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the pandemic’s real global death toll could be two to three times higher than official records.
In the US, more than 745,800 people have died, making it the country with the highest number of recorded deaths.
