Ottawa: Several cases of influenza have been reported across Canada in the past few weeks. Most of these cases are of influenza B. This information was given by Canada Fluwatch.

The report, which comes weekly and tracks flu cases across Canada, said a total of 510 cases of influenza, which were detected in laboratories, were reported in the 13th week of 2023.

Of these confirmed flu cases, 364 were of influenza B and the remaining 146 were of influenza A.

This means that influenza B is currently spreading rapidly and is responsible for 71 per cent of influenza cases.

Compared to last year, this strain is currently spreading at a much higher level. During the flu season at the end of 2022, most of the cases were of influenza A and the case of influenza B was rarely reported anywhere. During March-April last year, only four cases of influenza B were reported, while 1283 cases of influenza A were recorded. In the 13th week, 15 children were hospitalized due to influenza and 14 of these were cases of influenza B.

Ottawa: Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said that he will sue pharmaceutical companies for $44 billion if elected president. He said this would be done to fix accountability of these companies for the role played by drugs (a substance that gives effect like morphine) in the pandemic.

Poilievre said that he would have also asked for an additional $4 billion for damage to the federal health care system by participating as a complainant in a class action lawsuit already launched by British Columbia. Apart from this, they would separately launch another lawsuit at the federal level and claim to recover non-health costs such as border security, prisons, indigenous programming, etc.

“Large pharmaceutical companies owe $44-45 billion to federal taxpayers and we will spend that money on recovery as well as treatment,” Poilievre said.

According to the province, BC filed a class action lawsuit in 2018 against major pharmaceutical companies on behalf of the federal, provincial and territorial governments, under which claims were made for manufacturing, distributing and recovering drugs from their consulting companies.

It filed the lawsuit against Purdue Canada, which is part of the American pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma, which is known for making the drug oxycontin.

The BC government had also made 40 of its producers and sellers as parties in its class action lawsuit and had also slapped a case against them. In June 2022, BC settled with Purdue Canada for $150 million. But the provincial government wants to hold the other parties accountable as well.

Ontario: Once again, Ontarians move their clocks forward by an hour this time, like every year. This was done because daylight saving time has been implemented once again from Sunday morning.

Doctors in the US are discussing this practice of changing the time every year. Doctors say that daylight saving time in Canada started on March 12, 2023 and to end on November 5, 2023. Doctors also say that daylight saving time increases the chances of getting a heart attack or other heart diseases.

Sleep specialists and health experts say that with the increase in daylight saving time, the light also increases and it makes it difficult for people to sleep and it also adds to many other issues.

The American Academy for Sleep Medicine (AASM) touched upon the issue of the exercise, which is held twice a year. The academy said that this increases heart-related problems as well as mood disorders and increases accidents.

Recently, ASAM and the American Medical Association said that it is in everyone’s interest to stick to the standard time. It is worth mentioning that a bill was passed in Ontario in 2020 that daylight saving time should last forever, but there was no general opinion on this.

Last year, the US Senate unanimously voted in favor of permanently adopting daylight saving time, but the bill was not passed in the House of Representatives.

The bill was introduced by senators once again last week. If the bill is passed in both the Senate and the House, the changed time on this weekend will be the last changed time in the US. After this, Canadian provinces will also be able to bring such a law.

Washington: The virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic, which killed seven million people globally, was leaked from a Chinese laboratory, according to a US media report.

This media report, which refers to the Classified Intelligence Report, has recently been provided to the White House and certain members of Congress.

The Hunan market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan was the epicentre of the epidemic. In late 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 virus spread rapidly to other locations in Wuhan. The source of the origin of the pandemic has been the subject of major controversy for academics, intelligence experts and lawmakers.

Ottawa: The federal government and Ontario government today announced an agreement in principle for a shared plan that will invest $73.97 billion in federal funding over 10 years in Ontario.

Under the deal, $8.413 billion for a new bilateral agreement focusing on the four shared health care priorities and $776 million through the immediate, one-time CHT top-up to address urgent needs, especially in pediatric hospitals and emergency rooms, and long wait times for surgeries have been finalized, the government said in a statement.

This will further help provide Ontarians with improvements in health care that includes:

Earlier last month, Ontario was the first province to be agreed to PM Justin Trudeau’s new health care deal for.

On February 7, PM Trudeau announced an investment of $198.6 billion over 10 years, including $46.2 billion in new funding, to improve health care services for Canadians.

This funding includes an immediate, unconditional $2 billion Canada Health Transfer (CHT) top-up to address immediate pressures on the health care system.

The work will now begin on a bilateral agreement based on an initial 3-year action plan that will detail targets, timelines and additional common indicators related shared health priorities in each jurisdiction.

New Delhi: It has been more than three years since the coronavirus and its disease COVID-19 spread, and the disease has claimed millions of lives worldwide, but so far there is not enough evidence that wearing a face mask can prevent the spread of the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initially claimed that face masks were not necessary, but by April 2020, they started asking people to wear masks.

CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said in September that face masks are the most powerful health weapon available for people. Then soon wearing face masks was made mandatory worldwide.

Now, a review led by 12 researchers from leading universities around the world has said that the role of wearing masks in preventing the spread of Covid-19 may have been minor or not at all.

Ottawa: Canada’s premiers have made up their mind to formally accept the federal government’s multi-billion dollar financial assistance for health care funding. But the premiers say they want the funds to continue for more than 10 years.

In this new deal, Ottawa has decided to donate $ 46 billion over a decade to the provinces for health care. The provinces will receive this amount on meeting certain conditions such as where this amount will be spent and the provinces will also have to explain how this amount improved the health care system.

The premiers say the amount announced at their meeting with the federal government last week is nowhere close to the amount they asked for. But the premiers also say that what is getting cannot be reversed.

“We have decided to accept federal funding,” Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson said in an interview after a virtual meeting by all premiers on Monday afternoon. We think this is a step in the right direction.

Stefanson said the amount would not be enough for the challenges faced by all provinces and territories regarding healthcare funding. Stephenson is currently the chair of the Group of Premiers, also known as the Council of the Federation.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s proposal last week will provide $2 billion free for Canada health transfers, an increase of five percent each year for the next five years, and $25 billion for priority areas such as mental health, data collection, family medicine, surgical backlog and health human resources for the next 10 years.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc have already met with Ontario, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador to sign the agreement.
