Mayor Bonnie Crombie said the decision was made after mississauga examined the experience of retail cannabis stores in other cities over the past five years.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) union said contract negotiations would continue, as it called on its members working for the Treasury Board and the Canada Revenue Agency to begin strike action at midnight.

In Ottawa, one of 250 picket lines across the country, striking activists staged a sit-in in front of Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office in front of parliament and waved Union flags. Crystal Patterson, 32, who works for the Transport Ministry’s office that organises state flights for the prime minister and others, said her main issue is getting a contract that covers the recent increase in the cost of living.

The union, which has been in collective bargaining for a new contract since 2021, had set a deadline of 9 pm (0100 GMT on Wednesday) for a deal. The PSAC says it is the largest strike against a single employer in Canadian history. “We really hoped we wouldn’t be forced to take strike action, but we’ve eliminated every other way to reach a fair contract for Canadian federal public service employees,” said PSAC President Chris Aylward.

The government is talking about an average 2 per cent increase in salary every year, for five years, while the union is demanding a 4.5 per cent increase in annual salaries.

The union also wants a ban on contract-based work, demands for more training against racism and the issues of arranging remote work are also on the agenda.

Todd Smith, Minister of Energy said that starting May 1 customers can opt-in to the new ultra-low electricity price plan which could save them up to $90 per year, while at the same time making our grid more efficient, helping to reduce costs for all ratepayers.

The new electricity pricing structure is a third option for electricity customers, in addition to the existing Time-of-Use (TOU) and Tiered plans. Customers that use more electricity at night, including shift workers and those that electrically heat their home or charge their electric vehicle, could save up to $90 per year by shifting demand to the ultra-low overnight rate period when province-wide electricity demand is lower, the Ontario government said in a statement.

The new ultra-low overnight rate, set by the Ontario Energy Board, will be 2.4 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is 67 per cent lower than the current off-peak rate, in exchange for a higher on-peak rate.

The new optional Ultra-Low Overnight price plan provides:

Ultra-low overnight rate of 2.4 cents per kWh: everyday 11 p.m.-7 a.m.

Mid-peak rates of 10.2 cents per kWh: weekdays 7 a.m.-4 p.m. and 9 p.m.-11 p.m.

On-peak rates of 24.0 cents per kWh: weekdays 4 p.m.-9 p.m.

Weekend off-peak rates of 7.4 cents per kWh: weekends and statutory holidays 7 a.m.-11 p.m.

Based on the Consumer Price Index, which rose 6.8% in 2022, the increase will help make life more affordable for the approximately 26,000 Canadian workers who earn less than the current rate, the federal government said in a statement.

The government said that federally regulated private-sector employers must adjust their payroll information with the new rate to ensure workers and interns are paid correctly as of April 1. Where the provincial or territorial minimum wage rate is higher than the federal minimum wage, employers must apply the higher rate.

Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Karina Gould, said that this new online Passport Application Status Checker provides Canadians with a useful digital service option for passport services. Shifting these enquiries to an easy-to-use online solution allows Canadians to have faster access to front-line staff to serve them and answer questions, both now and during future seasonal peaks.

Now, Canadians can apply for a passport at these locations and receive it after 10 business days. Once issued, the passport can either be mailed or be picked up in person. Since the launch on August 15, 2022, the 13 Service Canada Centres offering 10-day passport pick-up service have processed over 66,000 passport applications, officials said.

In addition to seasonal peaks, Service Canada is prepared for renewal applications to begin for the first set of passports with 10-year validity, which were issued in July 2013.

The proposed changes were announced on Monday. Under this proposal, remote workers will also have to give at least eight weeks’ notice to the company at the time of being fired or implement the one-time salary rule. The same rule is followed by the employees working in their offices during large scale layoffs by the companies.

Introducing the proposal on Monday, Ontario’s Labour Minister Monte McNaughton said in a statement that even if an employee goes to the workplace on a daily basis and is working for a company from a remote place, no billion dollar company can treat its remote employees as second class.

Currently, under Ontario’s Employment Standards Act (ESA), if 50 or more employees are laid off by a company over a period of four weeks, the company has to give eight, 12 or 16 weeks’ notice to such employees to do so.

Remote workers are not protected when large-scale layoffs are carried out by a company because there is no such provision under Ontario’s existing labor laws. If this new bill is passed, then remote workers will also get the same protection as in-office workers.
