Toronto: According to a new survey, Olivia Chow has gone far ahead in the race for the post of Mayor of Toronto. But still the voters have not been able to make up their minds.

According to a survey conducted by the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC), Chow currently enjoys support from 16 per cent of voters.

With this modest increase, Chow has overtaken former Toronto police chief Mark Saunders and counselor Josh Matlow, who is getting 12 percent support. Councillor Brad Bradford and former Liberal MP Mitzie Hunter are currently backed by six percent of voters.

26 per cent of the voters who have already made up their mind are with Chow, with Saunders having the support of 20 per cent and Matlow with 19 per cent. 39 per cent of the voters are yet to decide which candidate they want to vote for and only 18 per cent of the voters say that they will vote for their candidate.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted by Mainstreet Research also shows the wind direction towards Chow. According to this survey, 26 percent of the voters are ready to vote in favor of Chao. Former councillor Ana Bailão, a close political aide to former mayor John Tory, is said to be second only to Chow with 21 per cent support.

Tory resigned in February 2023 after an affair with his own staff member came to light. Toronto’s by-election will be held on June 26.

Ontario: The Ontario government is investing several million dollars to improve the province’s bail system. By doing so, the government wants to ensure that they fulfil all the bail conditions granted to high-risk offenders and those with a mindset of repeating violent crimes.

On Thursday, Premier Doug Ford announced that $112 million would be invested to set up violent crime bail teams, bring in new technology, provide resources to prosecutors for complex bail hearings, as well as promote the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) squad of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

“We urgently need bail reforms,” Ford said. We see every day how innocent and innocent people lose their lives at the hands of dangerous criminals. We want to ensure that dangerous criminals are kept imprisoned behind bars so that the naked dance of death can be stopped from our streets.”

$24 million will be given to police services for three years for a new Bail Compliance and Warrant Appreciation Grant to establish dedicated Bell Compliance Teams. The OPP’s rope squad will be given $48 million to set up the Bail Compliance Unit.

This will focus on those convicts who do not meet the bail conditions or abscond. At the same time, the province will invest $ 26 million to set up intensive serious violent crime bail teams.

This will help prosecutors prepare for bail hearings and establish a new bell monitoring system across Ontario through the Bail Compliance Dashboard.

Ottawa: Federal workers have intensified their strike after flight attendants from across Canada took part in the rally held on Tuesday. These flight attendants demand that they should also be paid when they are at work.

Unlike other professions, flight attendants do not get paid when they start their shift but are paid from the time the aircraft is preparing to take off and after the flight reaches its destination. The union leading the flight attendants says they spend almost a week every month without pay.

“When they report before work, as if they have a report time at 8:00 a.m., they’re briefing before the flight, doing more safety checks, preparing for catering, they don’t get paid,” said Rena Kisfaalvi, a flight attendant. When the plane lands and the passengers are disembarking from the plane, they do not even get paid for that time. If there is a medical problem and they have to stay there for help, they do not even get paid for it.

“They have to undergo annual training as safety professionals,” said Fred Hahn, president of Cope Ontario. But even for this compulsory training, which is a quarterly in total, they don’t get any money. Kisfalvi said that flight attendants have to take care of the passengers in addition to giving them food items, but they do not come in any number.

The union wants the federal government to take action in this regard and big airlines should also work in this direction. For this, the union has also launched an awareness campaign.

Ottawa: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today announced new military, economic and cultural assistance to Ukraine. Trudeau made the announcement during a meeting with the Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Toronto.

As part of Canada’s assistance, thousands of rifles, dozens of machine guns and a large number of ammunition will be provided to Ukraine.

Trudeau also announced Canada has disbursed a $2.4 billion loan to the Government of Ukraine to support essential services, such as pension payments, purchasing fuel, and restoring damaged energy infrastructure.

Trudeau and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal also signed a new agreement that will help Ukrainian and Canadian youth work and travel to the two countries. Along with this, the current Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Deal has also been updated.

Trudeau said Canada was imposing new sanctions on 14 Russian individuals, 34 Russian goods and nine financial sector organisations in Belarus. This is being done in exchange for their support for Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

“Canada appreciates Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself against Putin’s high-handedness, and we will continue to extend all possible help to Ukraine,” Trudeau said.

During this time, Ukraine Prime Minister thanked the Canada for all the support. He also called on Canada for additional military cooperation to further strengthen defences in eastern Ukraine.

Ottawa: Canada is likely to await an investigation by the US Security Services into leaked documents from the Pentagon about operations being carried out by the United States and NATO in Ukraine. Therefore, Canada will not start an investigation at its own level, the National Security Expert said.

Over the weekend, U.S. officials briefed their partners and friends, including Canada, about the impact of the leak. “Canadian authorities want to understand the seriousness of this leak and also to find out how much information related to Canada has been leaked in these documents,” said Wesley Wark, senior fellow at the Center for International Governance Innovation.

These documents, posted online, are covered with the secret label and contain information about weapons and equipment sent to Ukraine. But at the same time, there are shortcomings in these documents, due to which their relevance is being questioned. Efforts are also being made to find out if they were tampered with.

In the leaked documents, Russian hackers have also claimed that they have successfully accessed Canada’s natural gas infrastructure. The Communications Security Establishment, Canada’s cyber spy agency, said in a statement that it could not comment on this at the moment.

Ottawa: As part of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, announced that the Canadian government will deploy a Royal Canadian Air Force CP-140 Aurora Air Detachment under Operation (Op) NEON, in Japan.

Op NEON is the Canadian Armed Forces contribution to the multinational effort to support the implementation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions imposed against North Korea.

This deployment underscores the value that Canada places on the security of its allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as the importance of upholding UNSC sanctions on North Korea, a government statement said.

For a period of approximately six weeks, the CP-140 Aurora will monitor for suspected maritime sanctions evasion activities, in particular ship-to-ship transfers of fuel and other commodities banned by the UNSC.

Toronto: Nineteen Canadians are finally returning to the country after spending four years in an open-air prison in northeastern Syria, reliable sources said.

According to an eyewitness, on Tuesday, Canadian authorities evacuated six women and 13 children from the al-Roz camp in Syria. Al-Roz is one of several campuses and prisons run by Kurdish forces in the region where 40,000 suspected ISIS militants and supporters have been detained.

The majority of those detained are children. Two years ago, the United Nations asked all countries to take back their citizens from these camps.

The RCMP was present at the camp since last week to screen mothers and children.

According to sources familiar with the plan, these Canadians, who are to be brought, belong to Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal. But their number is still low.

The 38-year-old Quebec woman and her six children were not among those who left the camp. The woman lives with her children in another part of the camp.

Toronto: Candidates who have announced their candidacy for Mayor of Toronto formally launch the mayoral campaign from today.

The candidates make it formally effective by submitting papers in this regard and in all, 28 people signed up to run on the first day of the nomination period on Monday.

The filing of nominations for the by-election to the post of mayor began at 8:30 am. Former councillor Anna Bylao registered her name as a candidate at 8:30 a.m.

Former Toronto police chief Mark Saunders also filed his nomination in the electoral fray along with Bylao. Councillor Brad Bradford arrived at City Hall early in the morning and file his nomination papers. Councillor Josh Matlow confirmed filed nomination around 9:30 a.m.

Ontario’s Liberal MPP Mitzi Hunter had earlier announced her intentions to register herself as a candidate on Monday but later said she wanted to resign from her seat in the provincial assembly first during the process.

The city council formally declared the mayor’s post vacant on Wednesday last week after former mayor John Tory abruptly stepped down from his post an estimated six weeks ago. Nominations for the mayor’s post will be closed on May 12.

The advance polls will be held from June 8 to 13 and the by-elections are scheduled to be held on June 26.

Toronto: Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has overtaken Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the matter of which leader Canadians see as their favorite prime minister. This has been revealed from the latest survey conducted by Nanos.

At present, the Conservatives are at the top of the power index with 50 points, the Liberals in second place with 47 points and the NDP in third place with 46 points.

According to this poll, the time is not going very well for the Liberals at the moment, while the wind is currently looking at the Conservatives.

Meanwhile, there has been a sudden decline in support for Trudeau as prime minister, while there has been an increase in the number of people who like Poilievre as prime minister.

“Usually, the incumbent prime minister benefits, but the rise of Poilievre’s popularity is clearly visible,” said Nik Nanos pollster, chair of Nanos Research.

Nanos said that the Liberals had been rising on Nanos’ power index for some time, but over the years, the Conservatives have gradually begun to get heavier, and at this time the Conservatives are a little ahead of the Liberals.

New Delhi: India has conveyed its resentment to Canada over pro-Khalistani activists in Canada protesting against Indian authorities. In addition, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has summoned the Canadian High Commissioner to express strong concern over the actions of extremist elements against India’s diplomatic mission and consulates in Canada.

The government sought clarification on how such elements were allowed to violate the security of Indian diplomatic missions and consulates in the presence of police.

India’s High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma had to cancel his attendance at an event in Surrey, British Columbia, as around 200 hardliners gathered in front of the venue with swords and sticks to demand the release of Amritpal Singh. Apart from this, many such incidents have taken place.
