Covid: UK start to pandemic worst public health failure ever
London: A report by MPs state that UK’s failure to handle pandemic was one of the worst ever public health failure.
This is a long-awaited report from Social Care Committee, Health, the Science and Technology Committee, which also includes MPs from all parties.
The government approach supported by scientists was to control the situation and in effect achieve herd immunity by infection, report said.
“There was a delay in introducing the first lockdown, costing lives but there had been successes too, particular the vaccination programme, termed as one of the most effective initiatives in UK history,” the report said.
Over 150-pages report that shed light on variety of successes and failings over the course of the pandemic which took over 150,000 lives to date and is described by the MPs as the “biggest peacetime challenge” for a century.
Tory MPs Jeremy Hunt and Greg Clark, who chair the committees, said that due to unprecedented nature of pandemic it was impossible to get everything right but still UK has managed to combine some big achievements with some big mistakes.
