Ford, Freeland among others encouraging Tory not to resign as Toronto mayor
Ontario: Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and the Toronto Police Union are encouraging Toronto Mayor John Tory not to resign from his post.
In a surprise announcement on Friday, Tory had said he would resign after it was revealed that he had an affair with his former staffer. Tory also said that his relationship with the 31-year-old woman ended in early 2023 after mutual consent.
At the time, Tory said he wanted to focus on improving his relationship with his wife. Tory was married to Barbara Hackett 45 years ago. Tory’s announcement to resign comes at a time when budget talks are underway in the city council.
Councillor James Pasternak said Tory would continue in office even after the budget announcement. It was not immediately clear whether he would resign as mayor on Wednesday or resign after the budget was passed. According to a source close to the mayor, Ford, Freeland and the police union are asking Tory not to resign from his post.
In addition to these, some city councillors are also asking Tory to reconsider his decision to resign.
Meanwhile, the Firm Research said that it is conducting a survey in which people are being asked whether Tory should be given a second chance as mayor.
