Toronto: As the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeaus has failed to get majority again Jagmeet Singh-led New Democratic Party (NDP) will play a crucial role in his Liberal government.

In the elections held on Monday, Trudeau’s ruling Liberal Party again ended up 14 seats short of the 170-mark in the 338-member House of Commons, therefore, NDP will again hold the balance of power as it increased its tally from 24 to 27.

Trudeau called the vote two years early with an aim to regain the majority in parliament, which he lost in 2019. He first took power in 2015.

Ottawa: Incumbent Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won the Federal election on Monday in hotly contested elections against a rookie conservative leader. He, however failed to gain majority in the polls, according to projections by television networks.

Trudeau called the vote two years early with an aim to regain the majority in parliament, which he lost in 2019. He first took power in 2015.

Trudeau said, “Thank you, Canada — for casting your vote, for putting your trust in the Liberal team, for choosing a brighter future. We’re going to finish the fight against COVID. And we’re going to move Canada forward. For everyone.”

Around 5.7 million people have voted at advance polls and many had voted by mail, Elections Canada is still expecting that a significant turnout of voters on September 20. A record-setting early turnout that suggests there’s an energized electorate. Millions will visit booths to cast their votes on Monday.

In Ontario, the polling stations opened Monday at 9:30 a.m. and will close at 9:30 p.m. Here’s when the polls will close across the country, by time zone.

OTTAWA: With a day left for federal election, leaders of Canada’s main political parties on Sunday organised campaigns for the final day here.

The polls surveys are indicating that the Liberals of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hold an edge in the election and likely to form the government again.

Trudeau, who had called the vote two years ago to gain a majority government, faced stiff attack from opposition for calling elections during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He lost the majority in Parliament in 2019. He first took power in 2015.

Trudeau’s initial healthy lead disappeared as voters were unhappy with the early call. Polls show that neither the Liberals nor their rival right-leaning Conservatives have anywhere near the 38% public support needed for a majority. Therefore, Trudeau might again form a minority government in Canada.

“Now is the time to pick the right direction for our country to keep moving forward or let the Conservative takes us back,” Trudeau said while addressing a crowd of over 200 volunteers in Montreal.

In contrast, Conservative leader Erin O’Toole planned to spend the entire day in parliamentary constituencies near Toronto.

Toronto: In a setback to Liberals’ federal elections campaign, one of its candidates from Toronto was asked to “pause campaigning” as the party investigated an allegation of sexual assault against him.

That revelation came in a report from the daily Toronto Star on Thursday night. It reported that Kevin Vuong, the party nominee from the riding (as constituencies are called in Canada) of Spadina – Fort York was charged with sexual assault by an unidentified woman in 2019.

According to the Star, Vuong “unequivocally” denied the charge and described them as “false”. However, he added, “I will be taking some time with my family.”

Vuong actually faced the charge in court but it was withdrawn in November 2019, the Hindustan Times report said adding that however, in an interview with the daily, the alleged victim said the incident occurred in April that year but she “didn’t have the energy” to undergo a trial in this regard.

TORONTO: Thousands of eligible voters in Canada won’t be able to cast their vote in the federal election due to COVID-19 pandemic.

As the deadline for mail-in ballot will elapsed at 6pm on Tuesday, those who have diagnosed with coronavirus between now and elections day will not be allowed to vote due to mandatory isolation period extends beyond election day.

If someone has COVID, they should be in quarantine and that would make it impossible for them to show up at a polling place,” a spokesperson for Elections Canada told CTVNews.ca in an email.

As per the Elections Canada’s online FAQ, voters must contact their local public health authority if they develop symptoms for next steps, but “after Tuesday, Sept. 14, electors who have or believe they have COVID-19 and who have not already applied to vote by mail will not be able to vote.”

Ottawa: As only six days left in the federal elections, Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole launched fierce attack on his main opponent Justin Trudeau urging people to ‘punish’ him for declaring ‘unwanted and unnecessary elections’.

Trudeau has been facing criticism and attacks from opposition on the election call itself, an attempt to form a majority government in the Canada in the middle of the imminent fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Talking to media persons during a campaign stop in Russell, Ont., on Tuesday, O’Toole said, “A leader who has called elections in middle of health crisis is a person you cannot trust. Trudeau is attempting to stage a self-interested power grab at this unprecedented critical time.”
