Toronto City Clerk John D. Elvidge said that it is the city council’s responsibility to declare the mayor’s office empty and then pass a bylaw for the by-election at its meeting next month. If approved, the nominations for candidates will open from April 3 and advance voting can begin from June 8.

The city clerk usually does not announce a date for the by-election before the council passes a bylaw, but Elvidge said that the sooner Toronto residents know the date, the better it is. By making the dates public at this time, the city clerk will also get an opportunity to make preparations for recruiting election staff and booking voting locations.
