Trump indicted in Manhattan, 1st ex-President charged with crime
Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury. This information was given by prosecutors and defense lawyers on Thursday. With this, Trump has become the first former US president to face criminal charges and this has dealt a major blow to his hopes of returning to the White House next year.
While the charges against Trump were not disclosed on Thursday, the case focused on payments made to silence claims of extramarital ties during the 2016 presidential campaign. Prosecutors say they are working on the matter of Trump’s surrender and it could happen next week.
Trump’s conviction comes after years of investigation into Trump’s business, political and personal dealings. Trump and his admirers say that all this is being done by democratic prosecutors with the intention of targeting Republicans with political objectives in mind.
Trump is still denying any wrongdoing and says it will cause a major loss to Democrats in 2024. Confirming the charges, defense attorneys Susan Neckeles and Joseph Tacopina said Trump had committed no crime and that the decision would be challenged in court.
The case dates back to 2016 when prosecutors had to investigate whether actor Stormy Daniels and former playboy model Karen McDougall were paid money to prevent them from being taken to the public for their alleged extramarital relationship.
